Our beekeeping originally began as a hobby project, even before we met in 2021. It quickly became a shared passion and has continued to grow over the years.

Our Path to Beekeeping

Romi

During her biology studies and her work as a field ecologist, her interest in insects was sparked, and she researched the important role they play for our environment and ultimately for us humans. At the end of 2019, Romi moved to the countryside with her parents. There, they dedicated themselves together to actively promoting biodiversity on their 1.5-hectare property. One of their main goals was to combine self-sufficiency with fresh food with regenerative management. In early 2021, Romi was already looking into the topic of beekeeping when she met Matthias.

Matthias

Besides his garden, he had always been a big fan of hornets. He began experimenting with building nesting boxes for their closest relatives, the bumblebees, and in 2019, he got his first two bee colonies. As a passionate tinkerer and craftsman, he soon began to optimize his operating methods and design his first own beehives. When he met Romi, he already had 8 bee colonies, nearly finished hive designs, and was harvesting enough honey to supply his family.

Together, We Took Off

Beekeeping and our gardens connected us from the very beginning, and so we spent all our free time on our small hobby beekeeping operation, refining and implementing the hive designs, propagating plants, and being out in nature. We soon got the nickname "the Buzzers," as bees were our number one topic of conversation day in and day out 😄🐝

We continuously improved our operating methods, learned from our mistakes, and kept optimizing our harvesting techniques. We bought a honey extractor, invested in storage containers, and were very happy that more and more friends and family became interested in our honey 🍯☺️.

We always wanted to share our enthusiasm for nature, for regional and sustainably produced food, and for biodiversity. This led to the idea of creating our own website, documenting our work, and sharing our experiences. 2024 was finally the year a new chapter began for our beekeeping operation 😄
